How Condensing Hot Water Heaters Work

Condensing water heaters utilize natural gas or propane to heat water. Upon activating the hot water tap or when the thermostat signals a need for hot water, a gas burner ignites within a sealed combustion chamber. Unlike non-condensing heaters that release hot gases into the atmosphere, condensing water heaters employ a secondary heat exchanger to capture and utilize this heat.
The secondary heat exchanger rapidly cools exhaust gases, causing water vapor in the exhaust to condense into liquid form. This process, known as condensation, releases additional heat energy, called latent heat, transferred to the incoming cold water. Before exiting the heat exchanger, the extracted heat from condensation preheats the incoming cold water, reducing the energy required to reach the desired temperature.
The preheated water undergoes further heating by passing through a coil exposed to hot exhaust gases, ensuring it reaches the desired temperature before reaching taps or fixtures. Cooled and condensed exhaust gases are then vented through a plastic pipe, enabling sidewall or roof venting, a flexibility not possible with non-condensing heaters.
Condensing water heaters offer high energy efficiency and lower operating costs by capturing latent heat from condensation. Achieving efficiency ratings of up to 98%, compared to the 60-70% of non-condensing heaters, these systems maximize energy usage. Unlike non-condensing counterparts that may waste electricity or vent leftover exhaust, condensing water heaters reuse exhaust to continue heating water, leading to lower bills and reduced environmental impact.
While condensing water heaters have higher upfront costs, the long-term energy savings often outweigh the initial investment, making them a cost-effective choice for homeowners seeking efficiency and sustainability.
